Pre-Interview Questions
While I’ve met many different nurse leaders throughout my clinical experiences, there was one whom I’ve known for quite a while outside of clinical who I would like to learn more about their role as a nurse leader. The nurse I was able to get in contact with for this interview is a close relative of mine who has been a nurse for many years working in long term care. This individual has shown various examples of being a nurse leader. She currently works as nurse at a long term care facility in New Hampshire where she provides bedside care along with working with families, providers, and other health care team members at the facility. I believe this position may be informal, but it could be formal as well. When thinking about the difference between the two, I think an informal position is where someone portrays the characteristics of a leadership position but does not actually have the title. On the other hand, a formal leadership position is a leader who has the designated title of a leader. I believe that someone can be an informal leader by portraying the characteristics of someone in a leadership position. I will hopefully find out her role during the interview. Being in nursing school, I feel that we get a lot of student experience in acute care facilities. What I’m really interested in learning from this interview is what she loves the most about working in long term care. What drew her to this specific role and position and what she loves the most about her career.

Nice job. You have identified some of the qualities your subject has that would certainly be expected in a leader and provided a couple of nice examples of this. It will be interesting to find out whether this individual holds a formal leadership position, or if these leadership qualities are simply part of her nursing experience. Your reflection could have used a bit more about the differences between formal and informal leadership as there are distinguishing factors. However, I look forward to reading about what you have learned about her leadership role in long term care.
